Mustang
  • Mustang ZK-TAF

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was designed in 1940 in response to a requirement of the British Purchasing Commission. With a Rolls Royce Merlin the Mustang was found to be an excellent high-altitude aircraft and at the time was the only fighter able to escort Allied bombers over occupied Europe.

  • ZK-TAF (civil registration) is one of 16,776 Mustangs built. Built in 1944, it served with both the United States Air Force (USAF) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) until 1959 when it was put on the civil register. She was imported into New Zealand by Sir Tim Wallis in 1984 and has been flying here ever since. ZK-TAF is painted in the colours of NZ2415, a No.3 Squadron (Canterbury) machine, to represent the 30 P-51s flown by the New Zealand Territorial Air force in the 1950’s.
